This is a an excellent opportunity for someone with expert credit knowledge and strong client relationship skills.

Job Purpose

  • As the Head of Business Support (BSU), you will be responsible for establishing the Business Support Unit strategy for the Commercial and Private Bank working closely with Bankers, Credit Risk, Credit Restructuring and Recoveries teams as well as other key stakeholders.  The strategy will be built around the robust credit stewardship of clients through the lending lifecycle. It will identify, manage and support customers in financial difficulty, making sure that customers receive fair outcomes and that the risk of loss to the Bank is minimised.
  • With the help of the right stakeholders you will retain, manage and influence a clear strategy for each client in line with Problem Debt Management Policy. The role will be pivotal in supporting Bankers to identify potential watchlist names as well as making sure clients are on the correct watchlist category. 
  • The role will shape how watchlist connections are managed within the first line.  This will range from full ownership by BSU, through connection shadowing to just regular guidance and support to Bankers of the relationship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leveraging Portfolio Control Team data (PCT) and other risk data to identify potential Watchlist names.
  • Signoff of Watchlist submissions to credit.
  • Shadow management of all watchlist connections.
  • Regular partnership/close working relationship with Bankers.
  • Attendance & presentation of cases to PPDMC & Credit Committee
  • Analysing and reviewing the performance of all our Watchlist (1 &2) strategies.
  • Support of team and/or bank wide projects as required.
  • Proactively oversee management of troubled loan relationship (both shadow & direct managed), some of which may be complex in nature, in the line with credit policy and risk management objectives.
  • Building a framework of reporting and MI that provides insight into the effectiveness of our activities.
  • Create, publish, and roll out formal processes, for early identification of higher risk clients to help build and support front office awareness of credit risk.
  • Identify and support the identification of efficiencies in processes/procedures for Commercial and Private Banking.
  • Supporting our governance structure by reporting and escalating the right data to maintain strong oversight and to understand our priorities, risks, and issues.
  • Develop relationships with external bodies such as property agents, lawyers, accountants and insolvency practitioners to maintain existing knowledge.
  • Act as point of reference for Banking teams to agree strategies before Watchlist lending cases (WL1 & WL2 Cases) are submitted to credit.
  • Leverage data produced via PCT (& other teams) to identify triggers for consideration to the watchlist.
  • Work closely with Banking, Credit Risk, Credit Restructuring and Recoveries & PCT to make sure the appropriate strategies are implemented in a timely fashion.

Leadership

  • Act as a role model Senior manager championing the bank’s culture.
  • Excellent stakeholder management.
  • Be the ‘’go to’’ point of contact to provide advice on clients in financial/non financial distress which could warrant consideration for addition to the Watchlist.
  • Effectively ensure that the business delivers on key commercial banking projects, both operational and regulatory.
  • Work with Business Management on ensuring an effective control structure is in place across the front-line teams.Where risk is across Private and Commercial Banking, Director of Business Management and Director of Commercial Products to agree ownership to ensure it is not missed.
Person Specification

Knowledge / Experience

  • A successful background in lending and debt restructuring and recovery, gained in a smaller Bank with a particular focus on Real Estate, owner managed businesses and small corporates.
  • Broad experience across the financial services industry and experience working in a smaller bank with a greater interaction across the overall operations of the Bank.
  • Significant experience gained in Real Estate and Commercial lending dealing with Owner Managed Independent Businesses and solid restructuring and recoveries experience.
  • Track record of delivering successful restructuring of problem loans, and achieving write back.
  • A knowledge and understanding of regulated lending.
Qualifications
  • Relevant Banking Qualifications or significant experience and track record.
  • Completion of Banking Exams desirable but not requisite.
