Job Purpose

Ensure the performance, security, integrity, and availability of enterprise database platforms across Oracle and SQL Server environments, supporting critical business operations and data-driven services. 

Drive continuous optimisation and rationalisation of the database estate, improving efficiency, reducing risk, and ensuring databases remain secure, resilient, and aligned to organisational standards and regulatory requirements. 

To place the interests of customers at the centre of all activities, act in a way that is consistent with achieving good outcomes for consumers and to comply with the FCA and PRA's Conduct Rules. 

Job Description 

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Optimise database performance and improve query efficiency across platforms  
  • Review and where needed modernise database security, access controls, and compliance measures  
  • Ensure data integrity through validation, consistency controls, and operational processes  
  • Maintain robust resilience and high availability solutions across environments  
  • Rationalise and consolidate database estates to reduce complexity and cost  
  • Monitor database platforms proactively and resolve incidents within agreed SLAs  
  • Plan capacity and manage resource utilisation to support future growth  
  • Support engineering and application teams with database expertise and guidance 
  • Stay informed on emerging database technologies and perform horizon scanning to assess their impact.

Person Specification

Knowledge/Experience/Skills: 

  • Strong Oracle and SQL Server administration and optimisation expertise  
  • Advanced performance tuning using indexing, execution plans, and workload analysis  
  • Experience with high availability and disaster recovery solutions (e.g. RAC, AlwaysOn)  
  • Deep understanding of database security, data protection, and access control models  
  • Strong knowledge of data integrity, consistency, and transactional control techniques  
  • Proficiency in SQL, PL/SQL, T-SQL, and automation using scripting tools  
  • Experience with monitoring, alerting, and troubleshooting database platforms  
  • Strong problem solving, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement mindset 

Qualifications: 

  • Industry focused degree or equivalent working experience 
  • Oracle, SQL Server and/or Azure certifications are desirable
