Job Description

In a second line of defence role, to support the Chief Credit Officer in their duties, in particular providing strategic leadership and oversight to the team responsible for mainstream underwriting of all deals, whether they be from Private Banking or Commercial Banking with due regard for Policy and regulation. Post drawdown to oversee the entire in-life management of all facilities. The team is also responsible for providing a second Credit Opinion on credit cases underwritten by subsidiary businesses which require to be presented to Credit Committee. As AL looks to grow the subsidiaries as part of its growth strategy the role holder may be required to assume direct line management responsibilities for subsidiary credit underwriting functions over time. To be a member of Credit Committee as approved by AL Board. To ensure all systems and processes for credit underwriting and monitoring are fit for purpose. To provide oversight on the activities of the Retail Mortgage Portfolio Manager.

  • To support the sustainable growth and diversification of the Banks’ lending book in line with the Corporate objectives, approved policy, and Business Appetite Statements.

  • Support the Chief Credit Officer in maintaining and building an effective Credit Risk function that embraces the AL culture, operates in a seamless fashion and supports the AL strategy.

  • Assist the Chief Credit Officer with submission of Policies, Processes and Procedures in accordance with the Bank’s Credit strategy and desire to enhance the three lines of defence model.

  • Ensure that key controls within the RCSA remain effective and are appropriately monitored and updated as appropriate.

  • Ensure that credit underwriting standards are maintained at a high level and are undertaken in accordance with the delegated authorities, policies, and procedures in place.

  • Provide oversight of the management of the in life cycle activity of the Credit underwriting team working closely with the Head of Credit.

  • Provide oversight of the Resource planning , development, performance management  and motivation of  the Credit sanctioning team.

  • To provide oversight of the Retail Mortgage Portfolio Manager who oversees the outsourced Tay and Santiago retail mortgage portfolios including attendance at Retail Mortgage Manco .

  • Member of AL Credit Committee with regular attendance as required.

  • Overview the management the Credit Committee process ensuring smooth running of the committees, the timely distribution of credit papers and distribution of minutes.

  • Working closely with the Head of Credit to ensure that all Credit Applications are reviewed in a timely manner to ensure that clients receive a professional and timely response.

  • Where workflow dictates, personally underwrite Credit Applications that come within the delegated authority of Credit Risk as detailed in the Credit Committee Terms of Reference.

  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Head of Credit and Managing Director, Banking to develop the credit capabilities of the FLOD including the development and documentation of governance, docemented procedures and processes as well as ongoing Credit training and enhanced Credit Stewardship.

  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with the Portfolio Control Team and Credit Operations  to drive continuous improvement in the end to end credit processes and systems.
  • Certified role for being a Material Risk Taker.

Key Interfaces

Directorate of Arbuthnot Latham, Functional Heads and relevant reports including Commercial banking, Private Banking, Dubai,  Investment management, Subsidiary management Teams and third party service providers. To support the CRO/CCO in Interface with external bodies including the PRA/FCA, and BBA

 
Person Specification

Knowledge / Experience

  • Thorough Banking background with particular emphasis on Credit, Securities and Banking Law
  • Extensive practical experience of Credit Underwriting & Loans Administration from within both ideally a Private Banking environment and a Commercial Banking environment with a core knowledge of property lending
  • Ability to multi task, rapidly adapt to new priorities and work under pressure
  • Strategic thinker whilst also being detail focussed
  • Familiar with end to end credit governance, processes and procedures
  • Previous experience of Leadership & Line Management responsibilities
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements as applicable to personal clients

Qualifications

Relevant degree or Professional qualification (e.g. ACIB) desirable but not essential
